Good
morning/afternoon and welcome to the 2018 annual Australian Film
Festival. The Australian films represented here today are examples
of egalitarianism and the idea of a fair go for all. They depict
the underdog, and their drive to succeed and achieve. In many
Australian films today these two qualities are shown throughout
which makes for a captivating and exciting film experience. Iconic
films such as The Sapphires and
Ned
Kellydepict Australians fighting against injustice, personal
issues and inequality, showing the value of a fair go and
egalitarianism.
The film The Sapphires is set in the 1960s and is based on a
true story, portrays four young Aboriginal women singers who fight
against egalitarianism and white society judgement in order to be

Both the films
address the issue of egalitarianism, and although they are set in
extremely different times in history, both represent the struggles
people face in society, whether it is due to ethnicity or social
injustice. In both films the main characters are looked down upon
by society as underdogs, in many ways due to circumstances that are
beyond their control. In The Sapphires they do not have much of a
leverage because of their race and continue to be looked down upon
by the white people because they are black. In the case of Ned
Kelly, Kelly was born into a disadvantaged family. Due to being
part of the Kelly family he too was looked down upon by society.
Both Australian films represent the idea of the underdog. They show
the struggle that each character is faced with, and the fight to
overcome the injustice that they face on a day to day basis.
Although at different times in history and facing different
obstacles, both films depict people fighting against injustice,
personal issues and
