Early on, childhood has an effect on one’s identity later in life. Parents raise their children a certain way that helps create the type of identity that they wish upon their child. For example, in “Teenage Wasteland” the main character, Donny, has parents who neglect him throughout the story. “ Donny becomes a troublemaker from the geco due to the case that his parents were never around to teach him what choices were right and wrong. Anne Bradstreet informs us that parents have a large impact on how their child’s identity will form. The ways that parents guide their identity would be through environmental, moral, and behavioral guidelines. This does not mean parents can burgeon or try to take away some portion of each child’s identity over time, but most children will stay selfsame throughout their life. When one becomes around the age of three to four years of age, many slowly assimilate what decision to make and the ones people classify either right or wrong according to how someone's parents react. Many agree with how our identity advances from our early childhood, “We always make these life-choices in the context of who we have become, but this context does not completely determine us” (Blagg).
