Beliefs about
abnormal behavior change depending on cultural differences. During
medieval times a lot of mentally ill people were mistreated, some
were believed to be witches and in cohorts with the Devil. Some
mentally ill people were put in asylums. Often they were chained to
their beds and left in unsanitary conditions. As time went on
people stopped believing that abnormal behaviors were the result of
witchcraft or demonic possession.
During the mid-20th century the United States had a lot of
mental hospitals. These hospitals were sub-par and unsanitary. The
employees were not trained well and patients were often abused and
neglected. During this time patients were admitted and typically
stayed in the institution for the rest of their lives. New
antipsychotic prescription drugs helped reform these mental
institutions.

The goal of
metal health hospitals today is to try and help patients be able to
function independently, or semi independently. Todays mental
hospitals aim to have their patients stay as short as possible.
However, if they relapse they will return to the hospital until
they are stable enough to return to their normal life. Some people,
specifically older adults, might stay in a
mental
healthhospital for a longer period of time because it is the
only place they can receive the type of help they need. I believe
that it is important for mental health hospital workers to be
properly trained and educated in order to ensure the best care for
the mentally
