I arrived to
meet a client in the county jail this week that has been in and out
of jail two times since his children were detained in October 2015
when the children were one and four years old. In the past, the
client was released on a Thursday morning then returned to jail
Friday afternoon due to public intoxication. Approximately two
months later the client was released on a Tuesday morning and
incarcerated on Thursday night again due to public intoxication. In
addition, the client has also had the opportunity to participate in
a work release program recently in which he was revoked from after
approximately a month in the program due to several positive drug
screens for synthetic marijuana during the
timein the
program. In the past 11 months,

I talked about
the childrens growth and happiness. The client stated that he was
thankful that his children were safe, yet he did not agree with
dynamics of the home for two children that came from a straight
couple and had a mother and father. I encouraged the client to
write a letter to the FCM to express his concerns directly to the
FCM as DCS and the state finds the particular foster home to be an
appropriate environment for the children as it is a state licensed
foster home. I also discussed that the children have been in the
home for the past 11 months and that they have become comfortable
and adjusted into the home without major concerns. By asking the
client several open-ended questions the client determined that it
would likely be best for the children to remain in the home, he
stated the importance of making changes in his life when he is
released on October 4, 2016, and that he didnt feel that he had
family that was suitable to care for his children. The client
reported that he had felt better after discussing the situation and

important I used motivational interviewing questions to allow the
client to address the concerns that were being addressed. I also
applied the ability to use self-regulation to manage personal
values and maintain professionalism in practice situations. When I
briefly felt that the client had put his children into their
current position, I used self-regulation to turn those thoughts
into more positive thoughts regarding the safety and the progress
of the children. I understood the importance of allowing the client
to be the expert of his life and presented myself as a learner as I
listened to him express his thoughts. In addition, I managed my
personal values of the safety of the children by presenting factual
information about the children and only providing factual
information about the children in the present time. I managed and
avoided my personal biases by not discussing why the children
were
