Life is
challenging for everyone. We will all face its difficulties
eventually; whether it be something financial, like paying bills,
something physical, like a bodily injury, or something emotional,
like the loss of a loved one. Billions of people go through these
struggles every day, maybe even you are going through something
similar. Because of this, it is important for everyone to stay
strong, despite the difficulties of life; because whether we like
it or not, bad things will continue to happen, and collapsing under
that pressure is no good for anyone. In William Ernest Henleys
poem Invictus, the narrator, who is very likely the author, tells
us that through all of lifes difficulties, we must remain
dignified, stand tall, and keep moving forward.The reason the
narrator of the poem is very likely the author is because, during
the time that Henley wrote this poem, he was going through some
difficulties in his own life. According to the Merriam Webster's
Encyclopedia of Literature, Henley was hospitalized for
tuberculosis to the bone, which forced doctors to amputate both of

while incarcerated in Robben Island, recited the poem to the
prisoners and it helped him build up the necessary patience and
strength to wait out his jail sentence and then destroy apartheid
in South Africa, in Winston Churchills speech to the House of
Commons in 1941 he paraphrased the last two line of the poem
stating We are still the masters of our fate. We are still the
captains of our souls. In pop culture we often see people who give
some sort of speech that motivates you to be strong and not give
up, these speeches are greatly inspired my Henleys poem since they
all touch on the subject of remaining strong even though times were
tough. An example of this would be in Rocky when he speaks to his
son about strength, which has subtle allusions to the
