The cases concern supply chain strategy, supply chain
co-ordination and inventory management issues in three supply
chains. Case 1 illustrates the evolution of the HewlettPackard
supply chain. Case 2 examines the impact of the bullwhip effect on
the supply chain. It describes how the order rate for Pampers
Diapers at P & G varied across the supply chain and the steps
taken by P & G to overcome this problem. Case 3 examines how
Cisco and Xilinx restructured their supply chain after encountering
a variance in demand and supply while supplying products via
intermediate distributors. Â
1. Explain how P & G’s use of VMI is structured and how VMI is employed to help reduce bullwhip and improve supply chain co-ordination. (5 marks)  2. List using bullet points the likely reasons that resulted in demand versus supply variance at Cisco. Draw a diagram of the new supply chain arrangement. Tabulate the possible advantages and disadvantages of this new approach? (15 marks) Â
3. Identify a key order winner for HP, P & G and Xilinx. Explain how the supply chain for each organisation is constructed (or could be constructed) to support this order winner (make use of steps 3, 4 and 5 of the “Hill frameworkâ€).
