Ontario artist,
Alfred Joseph Casson (1898-1992) was a blend of creative commercial
genius and artistic designer that communicated the ideology of
rural landscapes and rustic buildings into his paintings. He also
represented craftsmanship and creative quality in his art works.
From his field excursions to sketch and paint, he translated the
imagery and idea from his mind on to paper, canvas, and other
mediums. The span of Cassons artistic career encompassed an
evolution of technique and personal style. His landscapes and
architectural paintings are a composition of reality and the
imagination. Casson indicated he had no hesitation about including
other elements in his paintings by re-arranging the composition of
the picture (Casson, 1982,

box had remained the same for his entire
paintingcareer. It included five yellows, four of which are
cadmiums (pale, middle, deep, and orange) and one yellow ochre, raw
umber, burnt sienna, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, viridian red
and alizarin crimson. And he never used black. (Casson, p. 11-12).
Cassins colours are a haul mark of his paintings. An outstanding
watercolourist, Casson, is best known for his rural landscape
paintings and later became fascinated with architectural elements
of rural villages and buildings. Focusing of one of his paintings:
Old Mill Elora, (35.6 x 40.7 cm), 1930, watercolour on paper, in
private collection (Duval, p. 18), demonstrated Cassons techniques
of rendering clean lines and block like colours lending a
uniqueness to his landscapes. In addition to depicting the
architectural elements of buildings, he captured the element of
human presence. The Old Mill Elora was painted as part of the Elora
and Salem portfolio, the mill was the centrepiece of that
collection, and, the mill was also found in the center of town
(Casson, p. 74). Many of the buildings Casson has painted remain
today as if they are suspended in time. Casson pointed out, the Old
Mill Elora painting marked his coming of age in the craft of
watercolours (Casson, p.
