Rubric – Literature Review (Final Paper)
University-Track Graduate Writing
Criteria
Description
Citations and
Mechanics
Correct and complete citations for all articles
in the Works Cited/References section, as
well as correct in-text citations of either
paraphrase or quotes. No typos or
formatting errors (i.e. incorrect margins,
italics, etc.)
Includes title, clear introduction with thesis
statement, separate body sections for the
main ideas and conclusion. If headings and
sub-headings are not used, then effective
transition sentences are used between
sections. The paper’s arguments are
organized in a clear and meaningful way, and
they are written to flow together in a way
that is easy for the reader to follow.
Main ideas in each paragraph have
sufficiently detailed support and
explanation. Main ideas reflect what is
proposed in the thesis and the paper
explains how the main ideas relate back to
the thesis.
There is a balance of complex and simple
sentences. Vocabulary is varied and includes
some jargon from the field. Language is
appropriate to the author’s intention (e.g.,
correct verbs are used for summarizing or
evaluating), and uses the appropriate
academic register.

Grammar
Use of
Sources
There are very few grammatical errors, none
of which obscure meaning. There are no
errors in subject-verb agreement,
singular/plural nouns, spelling, or
capitalization. There are no or few errors in
structures like verb tense/aspect, relative
clauses, punctuation, etc.
The author uses all the sources listed in the
references. Each source contributes
meaningfully to the overall argument of the
paper. The author successfully makes
connections between multiple sources (e.g.,
points out similarities and differences,
highlights debates).

Final Synthesis Paper
For the remainder of the class, we will be focusing on
putting together your final
paper. This paper is a synthesis of the 5-7 sources you have
collected that are
related to your topic. In this assignment, you are expected
to write a cohesive paper
that draws on all your sources in a meaningful way to develop
a thesis statement
that demonstrates your perspective on the topic.
The larger assignment will be broken down into smaller
components, each of which
will be graded separately:
• Thesis statement and outline – due in D2L by the deadline
stated in the
syllabus. This will be a part of your assignments grade and
should provide
the “road map” for creating your paper.
• First draft – due in D2L by the deadline stated in the
syllabus. This will be
the basis for our in-class peer-review. The first draft
should be at least four
pages long and should follow the basic outline for your final
paper. This is
5% of your final grade.
• Peer review – completed in class on the deadline stated in
the syllabus.
You will be given clear directions for how to complete this.
If you do not
submit a first draft by this class period, you will be asked
to leave the class
and will receive a zero for your peer review grade. This is
5% of your final
grade.
• Final paper – due in D2L by the end of class on the
deadline stated in the
syllabus. You will have the entire final class period to make
edits, ask
questions, etc., but your paper should be essentially
finished before this class.
This will be worth 25% of your final grade.
Remember that your topic should be the same as that mentioned
in your research
proposal—if you need to change your topic, speak with me
first!
Specifications:
• The paper should be 6 pages long, formatted in 12 pt. Times
New Roman or
Calibri font, double spaced, with 1-inch margins. This page
count does not
include references or the cover sheet.
• All formatting should follow APA paper writing guidelines
(see D2L for
examples and explanations).
• All references must be included in in-text citation within
the paper and
included in an end-text reference list.
• The paper, and all outlines and drafts, should be submitted
as MS Word
documents in the appropriate D2L Assignments folder.
You may submit your paper any time during Week 8 if you
finish early. However,
you cannot submit your paper after the deadline stated in the
syllabus. I have
to grade them and have your final grades in by the next day,
so this is not negotiable.

Research proposal
1. Proposed research topic: Health Implications of Obesity on
the Coronary System
a. The rate of obesity continues to rise globally, reducing
life expectancy (Laditka &
Laditka, 2015). Widespread research has linked obesity to an
increased level of
body mass index (BMI) (Gerdts et al, 2013) and greater
exposure to
cardiovascular complications. For instance, a section of
studies have indicated
that obesity causes functional and structural variations of
the heart, which leads to
heart failure. The heightened prevalence of diabetes and
hypertension among
victims of obesity has been considered as a partial
explanation of the rise in risk
of cardiovascular infections among obese individuals (Vermeer
et al., 2016).
However, research has apparently downplayed the implications
of obesity on
coronary health. This study intends to identify the
structural and functional
consequences of obesity on the coronary system.
b. The coronary system is very important as it nourishes the
heart, and any health
problem involving the coronary system is hence fatal. For
instance, some studies
have suggested that obesity causes coronary artery disease
and atherosclerosis
(Csige et al., 2018). On the extreme contrary, some studies
have alleged that, in
spite of its many negatives, obesity has a beneficial impact
on the coronary
system, in a phenomenon referred to as the obesity paradox
(Csige et al., 2018).
c. The topic has continued to elicit controversy on whether
obesity causes problems
to the coronary system. The study will aid the health system,
through evidencebased practice, to better handle the implications
of obesity on the heart. The
consideration ought to include obesity and the coronary
system.
d. I find the topic important since the repercussions of
obesity are not well
understood. In particular, the implications of the condition
on the coronary system
have scarcely been researched
2. Research questions
a. How does the level of coronary problems relate with the
rate of obesity, for
victims of coronary complications?
b. What are the predisposing factors for obesity?
c. What are the health implications of obesity on the
coronary system?
3. Research strategy
a. Assumptions: The underlying assumption in this essay is
that obesity is a major
determinant of cardiovascular health
b. Sources: Most of the sources used for this study will be
online academic journals
related to the implications of obesity on coronary health.
Reputable magazines
and newspapers may as well be used for information.
c. For the academic articles, the first step is to establish
that the articles remain in
coherence with the questions of the study. If the sources
fail to address the study
question, in an express way, then they will be eliminated;
only articles that are
strictly in harmony with the spirit off the study will be
considered as academic
sources. Moreover, the researcher will have to scrutinize
every source of
information, critiquing them in the contexts of methodology,
underlying
assumptions, or theoretical framework. For all sources, the
reputation of the
authors and the sources will be checked to determine the bias
that may be
entrenched.
